VI Basics

As a nano fan, I find vi very baffling! But in some scenarios I need to use vi (such as debugging in a docker container). So, here are the basics below.

Modes

There are two basic operating modes. Navigation mode and editing mode.

ESC to go back to navgation

Editing

Press x to delete a character or i to insert

dd to remove line below cursor

Saving

Type :wq to save your changes and quit vi.

Type :q to quit 

Type :q! to force quit without saving changes
